Local Joven de Deusto: We are alive!
  • The City of Bilbao informed us that on the first days of September last year we had 15 days to leave the Gazte Toki de Deusto. We received the eviction order by letter while we were in contact. From day one we started working against this idea, because we were clear that we would do what we had to do to defend our Deusto Youth Home, which is our life.

Information assemblies, press conferences, posters, banners, interviews, mobilizations, collection of signatures, performances, works... we carry out all kinds of activities. Thanks to the work of all and all, it became clear that a people was prepared to defend the Gazte Toki of Deusto.

The City Council, by falsehoods, tried to sell in various ways the possible eviction of the Gazte Toki. The goal was to demolish eight homes to make them miserable and to offer the old market and low plants “in a self-managed way” to musical groups.

The 5,000 new homes to be built in the Bank of Deusto or the hundreds of empty homes in Deusto seem insufficient. These were his arguments, but we have made it clear from the outset that the problem of the City Hall is not the lack of housing, but the problem of having a free space to organize youth and make an alternative offer in Deusto.

It has been more than a year since we received this threat. Since then we have organized endless activities, we have carried out adaptive work, we have painted yellow... We continue here, between the streets Ramón y Cajal and Luzarra, but not in any way.

We are more alive than ever, because this threat has strengthened us. To celebrate it, at the beginning of the month we organised a full and varied two-week programme. The celebration began with the month of December, with Cuadrillas Day and the presentation of the new model of the Club de los locos. Throughout Saturday a unique atmosphere has been experienced in the north of Deusto.

On December 4 we held the Workshop of Medicinal Plants to better understand the uses of the plants that we can find in the environment. The following day, Deusto’s Gazte Asanblada held a dinner claiming that Deusto is not Bilbao, with political rallies. On 6 December we opened the Txoringito as every Thursday, as public holidays have no place among us.

On 12 December we projected Basque animated short films, Areka, Beti bezperako koplak or Miraila eta solasean with some of the directors. On Thursday, Fayez Badawi of the Palestinian Freedoms Front was in Gaza to give a conference on the situation in Palestine and the war in Syria, organized by the Siriaren Alde platform. On Friday we organised several activities: Popular dining room, round table to reflect on the city model and pasacalles by Deusto.

To finish the celebrations, on Saturday we enjoyed the musical performances of Los Cosmeticos, Uger and Diana Lagarto.

It is clear that we are not leaving here, because gaztetxe is our house. We have made it clear that we are alive and that as long as we stay alive, we will continue to defend the Gazte Toki of Deusto!
