The press conference of the World March of Women of the Basque Country, held on Tuesday morning in the Arenal of Bilbao, has announced that it will hold the XI edition of the World March of Women. The International Meeting. The spokesmen, Luciana Alfaro and Naia Torrealdai, reported that between 22 and 28 October, more than 130 women from 40 countries will participate, some representing countries and others in the form of allied organizations.

In 2016, the World March of the Basque Country was held in Mozambique with the proposal to hold these meetings there, and considering both the current strength of the feminist movement in the Basque Country and the “citizen character and capacity to create alliances that the World March has had in this country”, the challenge was accepted in the assembly of the...

The opening ceremony will take place on the afternoon of October 22nd through an open event. The feminist community of the Basque Country has been invited to participate. Once started, the meeting will have its own program. From 23 to 26 October, the Bizkaia Aretoa in Bilbao will bring together delegates from the countries and representatives of the allied organizations to reflect on the general context and its impact on women, and V. To organise the International Action. With regard to the aforementioned action, it is anticipated that a feminist caravan such as that of 2015 will be carried out in 2020. “In the places where the caravan passes, the movement is activated,” the spokesmen explain, emphasizing its importance.

“The process of building a feminist people is collective, we have no doubt about it,” they say, “we go together along the path that many women fighters opened and we intend to go far as we have said: to the sovereignty of our territories and our bodies!” In this way, both the International Meeting and the Feministon People have expressed their desire to be an irreversible “one more step”.

The Feministon People

It has been reported that, taking advantage of the context of the International Meetings, they are also organizing their own women’s day in the Basque Country, which they have named as Pueblo Feministon. The Feministon Village will be held as part of the meetings, on October 27, in an open space that will be created in the Arenal of Bilbao.

As feminist agents and groups from different corners of the Basque Country are involved in the construction of permanent alternatives, Pueblo Feministon “will be a place to show feminist alternatives and resistance”. The representatives of the countries that will participate in the meeting and will seek an exchange between the feminist movement of the Basque Country and the representatives of the countries that will support a popular feminist model, make visible the multiple sensibilities and bodies that make up the platform of the Women’s World March through Feministon Village.

Projects in Progress

It has been made clear that the projects of the World March of Women of the Basque Country in the near future are not limited only to October. To warm up the engines for the meetings, for example, a training day will be held in Pamplona on 28 and 29 September on inter-system violence and the sovereignty of territories and bodies. Apart from that, they also have in their hands projects such as open assemblies, a process of debate to strengthen the protocol against sexist murders or the creation of multiple supports of the protocol to reach multiple collectives.
