The environmental activist was killed in March 2016. After that, eight people, three of them military personnel, were arrested as suspects. Two of them received special training in the United States. One confessed to having something to do with the murder and said he was following orders. He added that he saw Cáceres’s name on a “black” list transmitted to trained U.S. special forces.
Cáceres was working against the construction of a dam, and the company that was building the infrastructure is headed by military and former members of the government. A military detainee served as the company’s chief security officer between 2013 and 2015.
