The Observatory refuses to participate in a series of conferences “aimed at promoting Spanish”
  • The Observatorio de Derechos Lingüísticas argues that the objective of the conference, which is to promote the Spanish language, and the normalization and revitalization of the Basque language, are contradicted. He informs the organizing entity Observatorio Global del Español of the decision by letter and sends a sample of the language rights violations received in 2024.

The International Conference of Language and Culture Observatories will bring together representatives of observatories and analysis centres from 19 May to 21 May. It has three main objectives: mutual knowledge of the participating centres, exchange of experiences and working methodologies, and creation of a network of world language observatories. Representatives from Spain and Ibero-America will meet. The Observatory for Linguistic Rights was invited to participate.

On Monday, in a press release, the Observatory announced its resignation from the Rioja days. The Observatory considers that the objectives of the Global Observatory of Spanish are the promotion of Spanish, the consolidation of Spanish-speaking identities and the development of the Spanish economy. He adds that these intentions “directly” hinder the normalization and revitalization of the Basque language, as well as other minority languages. In the opinion of the Observatory, the promotion of hegemonic language in territories with minority languages is a serious obstacle, which means that “the objective of the conference is not to analyze the rights of speakers of different languages and the situations of languages, although they have tried to represent it as such”.

The Observatory recalls that every year they receive examples of violations of language rights, many of which are perpetrated by the administrations of the Spanish state. These violations are reported in the annual reports and in the European institutions. He stressed that both the legal regulations of the Spanish State and the measures and resources adopted are “aimed at perpetuating the hegemony of the Spanish language”. Thus, it recalls that the Spanish Government and its public administrations should take measures to guarantee the linguistic rights of Basques.
