January 2025 keeps the trend of the last months
Climate change does not stop, and as a sign that the process is progressing, we have records that break temperatures in recent months. Through the study published by Copernicus, we can know that last January was the hottest year ever recorded worldwide: because the average temperature of the air on the surface was 13.23°C, 0.79°C higher than the average in recent years.
Although 2024 was the warmest year ever recorded in the world, 2025 has not started better and has broken absolute records in the first month. We must also bear in mind that last month the weather called La Niña turned cold in the Pacific Ocean and this led to a noticeable drop in temperatures.
Also hot in the seas
Regardless of the polar circles, the average sea temperature in January 2025 was 20.78°C. 0.19°C lower than last January’s temperature (last year is the highest recorded).

If you look at the two most important ice blocks in the world, you can think that the loss of ice is significant. The Arctic, which recorded an average of 6% of the ice expanse from 1979 to the present day, fell in January. The Antarctic, on the other hand, has had an average jetsia of 5%. However, the record data collected in 2023 and 2024 are blurred.
