“Ten Days of Leaving Screens” Challenge at 17 Locations in May
  • From the 15th to the 24th of May, the 30 structures that bring together 4,500 children or young people will complete the challenge of leaving screens for 10 days. From the nursery to the high school, the challenge will take place in 17 locations in the Basque Country, Biarno and Vendea. It has been declared a "collective social mobilization" by the organizers. It will be carried out collaboratively by different actions and structures: public schools, private schools, schools, associations, parents, local houses, mediatheists, natural and/or historical spaces, rest parks...

The challenge of leaving screens for 10 days was created in 2003 by Jacques Brodeur from Quebec. The project is based on replacing the time spent in front of the leisure screens for ten days with activities of association and discovery. Its objective is to carry out a collective reflection on our relationship with screens, with students, staff, teachers and parents of schools. But from practice and in a festive atmosphere among friends.

In exchange for screens, a wide range of leisure options and points

The challenge is to avoid using TVs, tablets, computers, video games and mobile phones for ten days. Instead, guests are invited to participate in activities organized by the school, parents, the people, or associations.

In order to carry out the challenge, the goal is to achieve the maximum number of points among all: They divide the day into five moments (before going to school in the morning, lunch time, afternoon, dinner time, and before going to bed), and whoever does not spend each of these moments without screens will get a point. Each participant carries the accounts in his/her brochure. And it is without competition, on the contrary, all the points of the class or the school are united, since the achievement is collective.

In the words of the organizers, this challenge is based on "freedom and honesty": it is the decision of each one whether to participate or not, and whether to live completely without screens for ten days, or to some extent diminish their use.
