Arratibel’s case became well known in the Basque Country when it was announced that he had been forced to sign a Police Declaration and in his desperation he had signed it writting besides his name “AZTNUGAL”, the Basque word for HELP, laguntza, written backwards.

Basque Peace Process published at the time of his arrest to letter’s one by the boyfriend of one of the arrested “Last Night” and another by a friend of another, “AZTNUGAL/PLEH” relating the events on those days.

Despite relating the torture and threats he suffered while incommunicado to Judge Marlaska, he was sent to jail under a preventite status for one year and a half. The ECHR has  condemned Spain for not carrying out a proper investigation of the Case.

This is the 7th condemn for this cause against Spain.

The Committee Against Torture of the UN held a hearing last week about the sixth periodic report of Spain.
